Nature's Classroom

Nature's Classroom is a collaboration between the Arizona Game and Fish Department and the Arizona Science Center to provide outdoor field experiences to homeschool families in Arizona. Participants are given the opportunity to explore some of Arizona's unique wildlife side by side with Game and Fish biologists.

These programs are extremely popular. Pre-registration is required and a waiting list will be developed for all events. A small $10 fee is charged to cover administration and handling charges.

For more information or to register for any of the events below, call (602) 716-2000, ext. 2556. Fee is due at the time of acceptance and no refunds are available.

To receive updates as new homeschool programs are made available, please email Eric Proctor at eproctor@azgfd.gov and request to be added to the homeschool list. In addition, consider signing up for our electronic educator newletter.

Bat Viewing

  • May 7, 2008
  • Scottsdale
  • All ages welcome

Participants will have the chance to sign thousands of bats as they leave nesting sites at sundown for their evening of hunting. In addition, live bats from Adobe Mountain Wildlife Rehabilitation Center will be on hand for the participants to be able to see bats up close. Bat biologists will be available to provide information and answer questions.

This will start around 6pm and will last until around 9pm.

Crayfish Capture

Ages – Parental decision.  This is an outdoor event. We will be around water the entire time. It may be necessary to cross the water. We will be using traps and nets to capture crayfish.  It is up to the parent to determine appropriate ages to attend.

Work with AZ Game and Fish Department biologists to capture crayfish in an attempt to eradicate this highly invasive species from our local waterways. Participants can expect to get wet and muddy and will be given an opportunity to taste the crayfish during the crayfish boil. Will begin around 8:30am.

There will be a slight fee to enter the Tonto National Forest and the passes can be purchased ahead of time at local Circle K or Sportsman's Warehouse locations.
