Volunteers Needed To Help With Fence Repair Project
When: Saturday, February 18, 2012 starting at 8:30am
Where: From Phoenix, take Highway 60 east towards Superior.  At milepost 214, turn left onto the Queen Valley Road. Follow the Queen Valley Road for about 1.75 miles and turn right onto the Hewitt Station Road (FS 357). Take the Hewitt Station Road for about 3 miles and turn left onto FS 172 - the turnoff is marked with a sign that says "Supersition Traiheads - Woodbury, Roger Trough." Follow FS 172 (the main road) north for 10 miles. Then, at the fork in the road, stay to the left and proceed the final 1.2 miles to Woodbury Trailhead.

Note: FS Road 172 is a maintained dirt road; however, there may be a few shallow water crossings along the way depending on the recent weather. A high clearance vehicle is recommended.
Description: The Chandler Road and Gun Club is in an Adopt-a-Ranch partnership with the JF Ranch and AZ Game and Fish Department.  The club assists the ranch with mutually beneficial projects and helps maintain a good working relationship with the ranchers.

This project involves making repairs/improvements to a barbed wire fence, which keeps cattle out of the Supersition Wilderness. The project will require hiking along a fence line. The fence begins at the Woodbury Trailhead parking area. We will only be working on the first mile or so of the fence; however, some of it is on hillsides. Brush clearing and various fence maintenance duties will be completed. Training, tools, and work gloves will be provided.

Spring Spotlighting Event "Black-footed Ferret Project"
When: March 8th through March 12th
Where: Aubrey Valley
Description: Spotlighting events are held in the Aubrey Valley to determine ferret population after the winter and to try and capture ferrets that were not trapped in the fall.  If you are interested in attending the March event, please sign up early, as space is limited and people had to be turned away last event.  If you sign up for spotlighting and are then unable to attend after registering, even if it is the night of, please make sure to contact us as soon as you can, so your space can be filled.  Email is checked at 6:00pm and someone remains at the field house until 9:00pm each spotlighting night, so please make sure to contact us via the information listed at the end of this email.

Requirements for Spotlighting:  Ability to stay attentive from 8:00pm until 6:00am while spotlighting for black-footed ferrets and ability to use or learn how to use a GPS unit.

Indicate which night(s) you will be atttending and who else (first and last name) will be atttending with you;

Please indicate if you will be able to use your own vehicle, and the vehicle capacity (4x4 vehicle preferred but not required). If you are able to bring a high clearance vehicle, it is greatly appreciated, as if frees up vehicle space for others and allows greater coverage fo the Aubrey Valley. Mileage is tax deductible.

List any of the following equipment that you will be bringing:  GPS, clipboard, flashlight, backpack, binoculars, walkie talkies, or a cordless rechargeable spotlight.

Gear - As ear can be a limiting factor fo rthe number of people that may attend, if you have any of the following, please bring it for your use: Headlamp or flashlight (these will not be provided), GPS unit, pen (to record data) binoculars, appropriate clothing.
 
Area Host at Whitewater Draw Wildlife Area
When: On going
Where: Whitewater Draw Wildlife Area located on the south end of Coffman rd. 2 ½ miles south of Davis rd. and 1 ½ miles west of Central Hwy. approximately 21 miles north of Douglas and or Bisbee.
Description: Wildlife area hosts are volunteers who assist manager with a variety of duties, interact with visitors, and maintain the facility.
Example of Duties:  Host duties include interacting with visitors, picking up litter, cleaning visitor restrooms, cleaning bunkhouse, yard maintenance, light farm work, replacing full sign in sheets with blank ones, maintaining and updating information on kiosk and information boxes such as history of area, wildlife species likely to be encountered and Department brochures. Other duties as needed – this may include assisting the manager with some shoveling, also lifting and moving 8 inch diameter PVC plastic irrigation pipe. Hosts are on duty from 7am – 4pm on weekends and holidays, and on weekdays when there are large groups of visitors.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Host should have good communication and interpersonal skills, enjoy talking with different types of people, be able to provide excellent customer service, and accept and follow supervision/instruction from manager. Hosts should be able to perform basic cleaning and maintenance duties. Knowledge of birding, Arizona wildlife, and tractor operation is a plus. Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs is also a plus but not necessary.

Training: Volunteer hosts will receive training in the following areas: interacting with visitors, answering visitor questions, and safety training.

Other Notes: A Two-recreational vehicle hook up site is provided. Applicants will need to provide references and will be interviewed via a phone interview with manager.

Powers Butte Wildlife Area Host
When: On going
Where: Powers Butte Wildlife Area, Southwest of Buckeye, Arizona along the the Gila River.
Description: Wildlife area host are volunteers who live on site, assist with facility maintenance and interact with vistors. Host should have good communication and interpersonal skills, enjoy talking with different types of people, be able to provide excellent customer service, accept and follow supervision/instruction from Wildlife Area Manager.

Host duties include interacting with visitors, picking up litter, cleaning and restocking material in information kiosks, identify and report any cleaning and maintenance needs to Wildlife Area Manager, other duties as needed.

Hosts duty hours change seasonally, expect 30 to 40 hours weekly.

Must have own Travel Trailer or Motor Home.

Water, Electricity, Sewer provided. May hook up Satellite TV at own cost. Great opportunity to see wildlife, especially birds.

Boating Safety Education Program Volunteer instructor
When: Ongoing. This program operates with volunteers and they are vital to its ongoing success.
Where: Volunteer decides where they want to teach (Phoenix Game and Fish department Headquarters is always a venue)
Description: 35 to 40 applicants are needed for the position of volunteer boating education instructor. They should be at least 18 years of age and need to complete a volunteer instructor application. They should have already completed either the classroom or online Arizona Game and Fish Department’s Boat Arizona course. The applicants will then be scheduled to attend the 16-hour instructor-training program September 13 – 14. Upon successful completion of the training, a background investigation will be conducted prior to any candidate receiving an appointment as a certified volunteer boating safety education instructor

It is highly suggested that applicants have a solid boating background and experience, a basic knowledge of Arizona’s waterways, boats, motors, trailering and safety equipment requirements as well as state and federal rules and regulations. Some teaching and/or public speaking experience will help as well. Certified instructors will be expected to teach, assist in teaching, or proctor at least two classes annually as well as complete any necessary or required in-service training once a year. Valid Arizona Driver's License required.

AZGFD Region 1 Office General Clean up and Maintenance
When: On-going M-F only 8am to 5pm
Where: Region 1 - Pinetop Office: 2878 E. White Mountain Blvd. Pinetop, Arizona 85935

Located in beautiful Pinetop Arizona, elevation is approx 7600 ft. surrounded by gorgeous forest, water ponds, and wildlife, work conditions couldn't be better. Call Sue for details and directions to Arizona Game and Fish Departments region 1 office.

Description: Volunteers will be asked to participate in general landscape maintenance duties.  Bush trimming, weed whack, sweeping, racking, are among the duties for this opportunity.  Also retrieving office supplies form warehouse such as copy paper, and drop boxes.
Long pants, Eye protection, sturdy shoes, and work gloves are required.  Schedule can be flexible

Range Safety Officers at Ben Avery Shooting Facility
When: Year round
Where: Ben Avery Shooting Facility, located in north Phoenix, just west of I-17 (Exit 223) on the Carefree Highway
Description: Range Safety Officer (RSO) responsibilities include checking the safe condition of customer firearms, observing participants while they are shooting on the range, maintaining safe operation of the shooting line, and providing superior customer service by answering customer questions about firearms.

Page Springs Wildlife Area Trail Maintenance
When: Work days can be arranged with the project leader, but usually occur on Saturdays, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Where: Page Springs Wildlife Area, 10 miles south of Sedona
Description: Volunteers assist with trail maintenance, using hand tools such as rakes, shovels and clippers. This is a cooperative project with the Northern Audubon Society.

Volunteer Shotgun Instructor or Range Officer for Women's Shooting Program
When: First and third Thursday of every month, 7pm-10pm
Where: Ben Avery Shooting Facility, located in north Phoenix, just west of I-17 (Exit 223) on the Carefree Highway
Description: Volunteers will instruct women of all ages in the shotgun shooting sports as prescribed by the Arizona Game and Fish Department. Coaches will assist beginners in shotgun shooting form and skill. Range Safety Officers will watch over range and ensure safety among all participants. Instructors will teach, and assist in teaching, or proctor the hour-long introductory class. Applicants must be at least 21 years old and participate in a free-of-charge Shotgun Instructor Certification process (2-day class). It is desirable, but not necessary, that instructors have shooting experience, basic knowledge of firearms and firearms safety, and some teaching/public speaking experience. Benefits to volunteers include free shooting at the main range and discounts at local sporting goods locations.
