Canyon & Mule Creek Volunteer Work Day
When: Volunteers Needed May, 14th
Where: Take SR 260 east from Payson up onto the Rim, to the Jct. with FS 512 (road to Young). Go right and drive south on FS 512 approximately 3 miles to the Canyon Creek turnoff and turn east (left) on FS 33. Proceed east on FS 33 to the Jct. with FS 34 (Valentine Canyon & OW Ranch) and turn right. Proceed down into Valentine Canyon to the Jct. with FS 188, stay to the left on FS 188 and proceed to Canyon Creek. Drive north until you reach the OW Ranch bridge. We will meet in the small parking area just before the bridge
Description: Come and help repair elk exclosure fencing along the creeks. Damage was incurred during the winter rains and we need to get them repaired. Our work will be taking out damaged fence sections and rebuilding new fence. RECOMMENDED GEAR: Long pants, long sleeve shirts (or layers), work gloves, hiking or outdoor boots,protective eyewear, and hats are strongly recommended. Waders would be helpful if you have them.

Anderson Mesa Habitat Project
When: Weekend of May 17-18
Where: From Flagstaff take Lake Mary Rd (FH3). Travel east approximately 8 miles. Turn right on Forest Rd. 132 (at the Lake Mary Store and RV Park) Travel South approximately 4.5 miles. Look for AAF Project Signs. Camp will be in the pines with lots of shade and space.
Description: Fence removal & maintenance of the Lake Mary Allotment boundary fence. We will be removing 2-strand electric fence, most of which is on the ground. Saturday morning. Meet at camp at 7:30 a.m. This is a 2-day project, ending on Sunday afternoon, although you are not required to stay for 2 days. Please feel free to come for any length of time you are available during the weekend. WORKGLOVES (the AAF will have a limited supply), food, water, personal gear,
and any camping gear you need. You may want to bring wire cutters

Burro Creek/Big Lake Fence Removal Project
When: May 31-June 1, 2008
Where: Main Camp will be at Dipping Vat Spring campsite just north Crescent Lake. SW of Springerville, AZ. From Showlow take Highway 260 East toward Springerville, turn south on paved Highway 273 (3 mi east of Springerville) and head south 19 miles. Look for signs at campsite on right side of the road. Camping is also available at Big Lake campground. Meals and meetings will take place at Dipping Vat Springs.
Description: Burro Creek is where we continue to remove barbed wire fencing in Big Lake area. These fences cross good Antelope, Elk and Deer habitat. It will be a significant benefit to remove these fences. We will be removing and rolling up wire, pulling and hauling out posts (steel and wood). We need a lot of help on this project so please mark your calendars. We will be providing meals Friday night, Saturday breakfast, lunch and dinner, and Sunday breakfast. We need fence rolling equipment, post pullers, pliers and as many able bodied volunteers as possible. We will be working with barbed wire and lots of it. Bring your sun block, hats, gloves and long sleeved shirts and pants. Be prepared for all kinds of weather. We need around 50 volunteers. Plan on arriving in the afternoon of Friday May 30th. Breakfast will be at 7:00 am Saturday and we will start working at 8:00 am. After Sunday breakfast we will work until about noon then pack up.

16th annual Adopt-a-Ranch clean up project at the Boquillas Ranch
When: Saturday, June 7th 8 AM to 4 PM
Where: Directions: From Phoenix head north on I-17 Hwy to I-40, Flagstaff. Head west on I-40 pasted hwy 89 and go right at exit 123 for I-40/US66 towards Seligman/Peach springs Hwy also knowns as East Chino Avenue. Pass through Seligman heading west. The meeting place (Pica Camp) is west of Seligman AZ.  Take State Route 66 to milepost 123.5, turn north and go two miles. Camping is available on the ranch if you would like to stay overnight.
Description: Each year the Mohave Sportsman Club holds a one-day clean up event on the sprawling 730,000-acre Boquillas Ranch.  Additional volunteers are very welcome.  Gloves, bags, maps, and tools will be provided.  Participants will meet at Pica Camp at 8 a.m. and receive information/training from AGFD.  Then volunteers use their own vehicles to disperse across the large ranch and search for litter.  After spending the day in the field, bring your trash back to Pica Camp where it can be transferred to the AGFD trailer. This is a family activity so bring the whole gang and have some fun in the sun.

Adopt-a-Ranch project repairing a water catchment and maintaining fences around a cattle-exclosure area
When: June 27 – 29, 2008.  Volunteers may want to camp on Friday and/or Saturday nights.  Food will be provided Friday evening, Saturday, and Sunday morning.  
Where:  From Highway 260, 3 miles east of Springerville, turn south on paved Highway 273 and go 19 miles to the Dipping Vat Spring campsite just north of Crescent Lake.  Watch for AES signs.  A map is available at www.arizonaelksociety.org 
Description: : Each year the Arizona Elk Society does a volunteer project in cooperation with the 26 Bar Ranch.  Additional volunteers are very welcome.  Tools and training will be provided.  The project will involve hiking and physical labor. We will be repairing a water catchment and maintaining fences around a cattle-exclosure area. This project will be near Crescent Lake, so be prepared for cool mornings and possibly rain.  Food will be provided Friday evening, Saturday, and Sunday morning.  Breakfast will be at 7:00 a.m. and we will meet at camp at 8:00 a.m. to start working. Volunteers should plan on working until late afternoon on Saturday.  A few hours work will be needed on Sunday morning

WMNG Bat Project
When: Beginning now until completed
Where: AGFD Phoenix headquarters
Description: The candidate will report to AZGFD Phoenix headquarters and be responsible for data entry of Legacy reports into AZGFD Bats database. Knowledge of Microsoft office (Word, excel), understanding of mapping and TOPO is a plus; Database entry experience desired but will train.

Sipe Wildlife Area Seasonal Host
When: Late May through Labor Day Weekend 2009 Hours 8am to 5pm, Three to four days a week
Where: Sipe Wildlife Area    8 miles south of Eagar, AZ  off Highway 180
Description: Open and Close Visitors Center (VC), oversee security of VC facilities. Answer the public’s wildlife and recreational related questions. Greet, provide literature, give directions and provide information and assistance to visitors of the Wildlife Area. Identify and report any cleaning and maintenance needs to Area Manager. No experience necessary. Must be good with people. Must have own Travel Trailer or Motor Home. Water, Electricity, Sewer, parking pad provided. May hook up Satellite TV at own cost. Absolutely beautiful hiking trails, great opportunity to see Wildlife, especially birds and Elk. Seven miles from small towns of Springerville, Eagar. Right in the heart of the White Mountains, close to fishing, hiking, camping and great outdoor recreational activities. Temperature in the 70-80 during day. Cool in the evenings.  Call for directions

Tonto Creek Hatchery Summer Host
When: April 1, 2008 – October 31, 2008
Where: Tonto Creek Hatchery, located 20 miles east of Payson, off highway 260
Description: Wildlife area host are volunteers who live on site, assist with facility maintenance and interact with visitors. Additional duties include providing change for feed machines, other duties as needed. Hosts are on duty from 7am – 4pm on weekends and holidays, and on weekdays when there are large groups of visitors. Host should have good communication and interpersonal skills, enjoy talking with different types of people, be able to provide excellent customer service, and accept and follow supervision/instruction from hatchery employees. Accommodations along with fresh water, electrical, propane and septic is provided. Applicants will need to provide references and will be interviewed via a phone interview with hatchery staff.

Upper verde River Host
When: April 15 2008 - ongoing
Where: Upper Verde River Wildlife Area - 8 miles NW of Chino Valley
Description: Host should have good communication and interpersonal skills, enjoy talking with different types of people, be able to provide excellent customer service, and accept and follow supervision/instruction from manager. Host duties include interacting with visitors, picking up litter, cleaning visitor restrooms, and other duties as needed. Opportunities exist for the host to be involved with development of interpretive signs, trails and other activities.  Opening and closing of the entrance gate to control visitor access may also be required.  Hosts are on duty from 7am – 4pm on weekends and holidays, and on weekdays when there are large groups of visitors. Knowledge of birding and Arizona wildlife is a plus. A recreational vehicle site with water, propane, and septage is provided. Applicants will need to provide references and will be interviewed via a phone interview with manager

Page Springs Wildlife Area Trail Maintenance
When: Work days can be arranged with the project leader, but usually occur on Saturdays, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Where: Page Springs Wildlife Area, 10 miles south of Sedona
Description: Volunteers assist with trail maintenance, using hand tools such as rakes, shovels and clippers. This is a cooperative project with the Northern Audubon Society.

Volunteer Shotgun Instructor or Range Officer for Women's Shooting Program
When: First and third Thursday of every month, 7pm-10pm
Where: Ben Avery Shooting Facility, located in north Phoenix, just west of I-17 (Exit 223) on the Carefree Highway
Description: Volunteers will instruct women of all ages in the shotgun shooting sports as prescribed by the Arizona Game and Fish Department. Coaches will assist beginners in shotgun shooting form and skill. Range Safety Officers will watch over range and ensure safety among all participants. Instructors will teach, and assist in teaching, or proctor the hour-long introductory class. Applicants must be at least 21 years old and participate in a free-of-charge Shotgun Instructor Certification process (2-day class). It is desirable, but not necessary, that instructors have shooting experience, basic knowledge of firearms and firearms safety, and some teaching/public speaking experience. Benefits to volunteers include free shooting at the main range and discounts at local sporting goods locations.

Range Safety Officers at Ben Avery Shooting Facility
When: Year round
Where: Ben Avery Shooting Facility, located in north Phoenix, just west of I-17 (Exit 223) on the Carefree Highway
Description: Range Safety Officer (RSO) responsibilities include checking the safe condition of customer firearms, observing participants while they are shooting on the range, maintaining safe operation of the shooting line, and providing superior customer service by answering customer questions about firearms.
