In 1990, due to the efforts
of a coalition of environmental organizations,
Arizona voters approved the Heritage initiative
by a 2-to-1 margin. From this the Heritage
Fund was established. The Heritage Fund allocates
$20 Million a year (from unobligated State
Lottery monies) for wildlife and recreational
use. The money is divided equally between
the Game and Fish Department and State Parks.
Since the Department manages more than 800 wildlife species (while receiving
no general state tax money), the Heritage Fund is a welcome and needed
revenue source. Heritage dollars support five programs that not only benefit
wildlife, but the citizens of Arizona, and the state economy as well.
So, if you play the Arizona Lottery remember.you may not win but you can't
lose because a portion of your lottery dollars is working for wildlife.
