The Arizona Bird
Conservation Initiative (ABCI) was born at the
Arizona All-Birds Conservation Workshop held
in September of 2002. ABCI’s mission is
to implement the recommendations for the conservation
of high priority bird species or habitats as
identified by the APIF Bird Conservation Plan
or any of the four major bird initiatives grouped
under the North American Bird Conservation Initiative.
Goals
- Develop diverse partnerships dedicated
to the conservation of all birds and their habitats
-
Serve as a forum for information sharing and
coordination via regional ABCI committees with
all bird conservation partners
-
Through broad-based consensus, identify and prioritize
bird conservation opportunities and needs
-
Encourage implementation of landscape-oriented
multi-species conservation efforts
-
Fund implementation of on-the-ground bird conservation
projects
Strategies
- Coordinate the planning and implementation
of existing bird conservation initiatives
-
Network and coordinate with agencies, organizations
and volunteers to establish a program of short-
and long-term monitoring projects for birds throughout
Arizona
-
Coordinate with Joint Ventures, Audubon Society’s
Important Bird Area Program and other programs
with objectives similar to ABCI
-
Coordinate bird conservation activities with
federal and state land management agencies, private
organizations and other interested parties
-
Promote education and outreach activities that
heighten general public awareness of birds and
their habitats
Committees
ABCI Regional Committees are open to any interested
parties. The primary objectives of the committees
are to:
- Develop projects to support the APIF
Bird Conservation Plan and other regional or
national
initiatives
- Provide a forum for collaboration among those working
in land and wildlife management and conservation.
