Trout Return to Core Waters Wed. Nov. 16
Trout stocking has already started for some of the upper elevation waters including Green Valley Lakes (Payson), Show Low Creek, and Patterson Ponds (Saint Johns). This week marks the return of the trout stocking season which runs until mid-March (mid-May for Payson area lakes). Catfish are still plentiful but may become more of a challenge to catch as the water continues to cool down.
Welcome Back the Trout Celebration at Tempe Town Lake: Tues. Nov. 21, 4:00 – 6:00 p.m.
The annual Welcome Back the Trout fishing clinic will occur Tuesday, November 21 from 4pm to 6pm, at the SRP Tempe Town Lake Marina on the north side of the lake. The fishing clinic is free and there will be free loaner rods and bait available to borrow during the event. No fishing license is needed during this event as long as you register at the Game and Fish booth.
Golden Algae Season Hits Several CFP Waters Early!
Golden algae (GA) has made an early appearance this year at Veterans Oasis Lake (Chandler), Riverview Lake (Mesa), and Cortez Lake (Phoenix). We also suspect GA in Alvord Lake (Phoenix) where a partial fish kill was reported. The algae is present in many of the Community Waters, and under certain conditions the algae can produce a toxin called Prymnesin that blocks the ability for fish (and other gill-breathing organisms) to use available oxygen in the water.
The algae is fiendishly clever and tough to manage because GA can be present in the lakes, but not producing toxins most of the time. Occasionally the algae get stressed when nutrients (such as nitrogen) are lacking. Under stress, the algae can release their own toxin. The Prymnesin toxin kills fish which then release nutrients into the water, and voila, their nutrient problem is solved.
This week’s trout stocking will be modified as follows due to confirmed or suspected GA or other water quality issues:
• Veteran’s Oasis Lake (Chandler): No stocking due to GA
• Cortez Lake (Phoenix): No stocking due to GA
• Lakeside Lake (Tucson): No stocking due to extremely high turbidity
• Alvord Lake (Phoenix): Scheduled to receive ½ of the normal stocking due to suspected GA
Trout will be diverted from the above-mentioned waters into other lakes including Pioneer Lake (Peoria), Desert West Lake and Encanto Lake (Phoenix), Sahuarita and Kennedy Lakes (Tucson area), and Desert Breeze Lake (Chandler). Riverview Lake (Mesa) has recovered from golden algae and will be stocked with trout this week.
