Catfish coming March 22
Get ready for Mr Whiskers! This week wraps up the trout stockings for the Tucson, Maricopa, and Phoenix areas, which means it’s finally time for some catfish. These feisty fish come all the way from Arkansas, carried on huge semi-trucks that act like aquariums on wheels. The catfish will average about 14-18 inches in size, or about 1½ to 2 pounds per fish.
Trout stockings will continue at Green Valley Lakes in Payson until early May. For more details check out the stocking schedules online, which are also posted inside the information cabinets at all CFP waters.
Golden Algae STILL blooming at several lakes
This winter has been the worst winter for golden algae the Phoenix area has ever seen. More lakes than ever before have been affected by this pesky microscopic troublemaker. Several CFP waters will not be stocked with trout this week due to the algae. Riverview Lake, Tempe Town Lake, Alvord Lake and Cortez Lake have all been experiencing golden algae blooms and will not be stocked. The cities are working with their lake consultants to address these expensive algae treatments, and we will notify the public once treatments have been completed and follow up testing shows golden algae is no longer present. Once cleared, fish stockings can resume.
