Introductory Firearms Programs
Pre-registration is required for all classes.

Annie Oakley – An introductory firearms course offered to ladies only. Course includes in class instruction covering the basic principles of firearms safety and terminology as well as time on the range where participants will use department provided firearms and ammunition to learn the fundamentals of marksmanship. All necessary equipment is provided and participants must be 16 years or older. Cost is $25 per person.
Wild Bunch – A family based introductory firearms course offered to both men and women. Course will include in class instruction covering the basic principles of firearms safety and terminology as well as time on the range where participants will use department provided firearms and ammunition to learn the fundamentals of marksmanship. All necessary equipment is provided and participants must be 9 years or older. Cost is $25 per person.
Youth Firearms Safety – This introductory class, for boys and girls ages 9 to 16, will cover the basic principles of firearms safety and terminology. In addition to classroom instruction, participants will have the option to learn the fundamentals of marksmanship on the range (equipment and ammunition will be provided). Cost is $25 per child (must be paid prior to the class). There must be a parent or legal guardian per child present at all times during the class.

Game and Fish Department .22 handguns and rifles are used for these programs. Please do not bring your own firearms or ammunition. This is a fun learning environment where participants with little or no firearms experience can actively learn and participate.
Our goals
- Provide a safe, encouraging and comfortable shooting environment for shooters of all skill levels from novice to expert.
- Promote firearms safety and education.
- Open the door to a wide variety of experiences, allowing shooters to progress into other shooting disciplines for personal satisfaction or competition.
- Facilitate a place where shooters can mentor each other, have fun and compare experiences with those who share a common interest in the shooting sports.

Introductory Archery Clinic
- Classes held in specific months of the year
- The Ben Avery Shooting Range Indoor Facility
- Time: 9 a.m.
- All equipment is included and there is no cost for this class. This is a one time class that teaches the basics of target archery

Classes for Youth
Scholastic Clay Target Program
This is a team-based sport designed to introduce young people to shotgun shooting and the clay target sports of Trap, Skeet and Sporting Clays. For more information, contact Steven McClure at (602) 942-3000.
Archery in the Schools Program
This program is designed to introduce Olympic-style archery into elementary, middle and high schools throughout Arizona. The program provides school P.E. programs with training and curriculum to introduce youth to archery. For more information, contact Brianne Sprehe at (623) 236-7605.
Hunter Education
Hunter education is a youth and family program with two class offerings. The Basic class is a minimum 20 hour course covering firearms. The combination class is a minimum 28 hour course covering the basic class and bow hunting. For more information call the Education Branch at: (623) 236-7235.
Arizona Gun Safety Program
With the passage of Senate Bill 1271 in 2005, Arizona school districts and charter schools are able to offer an elective one-semester course in firearms marksmanship. Since no such course existed when the law was passed, the Arizona Gun Safety Program curriculum was jointly developed by the Arizona Game and Fish Department, the Department of Public Safety, private firearms organizations, teachers, principals, authors and individual citizens.
The resulting course includes instruction on the rules of gun safety; basic operation of firearms; the history of firearms and marksmanship; the role of firearms in preserving peace and freedom; the constitutional roots of the right to keep and bear arms; the use of clay targets; practice time at a shooting range and demonstration of competence with a firearm. The entire curriculum is presented and may be used in whole, or in part, depending on the needs of the school district. Instructors for the course are selected and employed by the school in which the course is offered, and their qualification as a firearms instructor for a nationally recognized organization is verified by the Arizona Game and Fish Department.
