Public Meeting Notice
Draft Environmental Assessment and Restoration Plan projects in relation to the 2012 natural resource damage assessment settlement for the Freeport-McMoRan Mine near Morenci, AZ
The U.S. Department of the Interior and the State of Arizona will hold an informal public information meeting with interested stakeholders from 5-7 p.m. on July 13, 2017, at Eastern Arizona College in Safford, Ariz., to identify and discuss potential restoration projects that would assist in compensation to injuries of natural resources at the Freeport-McMoRan Morenci Mine (Freeport), located near Morenci in east-central Arizona.
In 2000 and 2001, mining related water bodies were documented to be highly acidic and resulted in death and other injuries to migratory birds through exposure and ingestion. The agencies, as Trustees for natural resources, received a $6.8 million settlement from Freeport, through the Natural Resource Damage Assessment and Restoration (NRDAR) program (43 CFR Part 11), which will be used for the restoration of wildlife populations and their habitat in Arizona.
This information meeting is an opportunity for the public to learn about the environmental assessment and restoration plan projects and have the opportunity to comment on recommended projects being proposed by the Trustee agencies. Interested stakeholders will be able to view copies of the Draft Environmental Assessment and Restoration Plan, lean about the proposed natural resource restoration actions, and have the opportunity to comment on the draft Restoration Plan/Environmental Assessment.
In addition, copies of the Draft Environmental Assessment and Restoration Plan will be made available at the Morenci and Clifton town libraries on July 3, 2017. We are asking the public to provide any comments they may have on the Plan by August 14, 2017 in writing to Renee Wilcox either through an email to the address below or mail to the address below.
The information meeting will be held:
Date: Thursday, July 13, 2017
Time: 5-7 p.m.
Location: Eastern Arizona College’s Discovery Park Campus
1651 W. Discovery Park Blvd.
Safford, AZ 85546
The agencies will have staff available to discuss the NRDAR program, the settlement, and how to provide information as the restoration process moves forward.
