Wenima Wildlife Area includes sensitive stream and riparian habitat along the Little Colorado River, upland pinon-juniper, grassland, and canyon rock cliff habitats.
The 355-acre Wenima Wildlife Area (WWA) includes approximately 2.5 miles of sensitive stream and riparian habitat, providing habitat for the Federally-threatened Little Colorado Spinedace, 121 acres of adjacent riparian and wetland floodplain, 184 acres of upland pinyon-juniper, grassland, and canyon rock cliff habitat that provides habitat for big and small game, nongame and potentially threatened and endangered species. A cultural resource site can also be found at WWA.
Information
Location
WWA is located in east-central Arizona, approximately three miles northwest of the towns of Springerville and Eagar. To get there, take U.S. Highway 60 a couple miles west going out of Springerville. At the junction of U.S. Highways 60 and 180/191, go a quarter-mile north on Highway 180/191 and look to turn right onto a graded dirt road going northeast. After 1.5 miles, the graded road drops a short distance into the Little Colorado River canyon corridor. Park at the designated parking area next to the restroom and information kiosks.
Plants
At WWA, riparian and grassland habitats are mixed with rock cliffs and streams intermixed with pinyon-juniper forest.
Birds
Common birds in the area include bald eagles, golden eagles, black-crowned night herons, green-backed herons, indigo buntings, belted kingfishers, American kestrels, blue grosbeaks, yellow-breasted chats, black phoebes, gray catbirds, and a variety of migrating warblers and songbirds.
Mammals
Common mammals include mule deer, ringtails, pronghorn, ground squirrels, and chipmunks.

Wenima Wildlife Area is managed by AZGFD.
