Off-Highway Vehicle Safety Education
Online OHV Safety Education Course
The Arizona Game and Fish Department’s all terrain/off-highway vehicle (OHV) safety education course includes instruction on the basic skills required to safely ride or operate an OHV. These include responsibilities of OHV riders to others and the environment, general information on preparing for the unexpected, additional educational resources, laws, rules and regulations for the safe, ethical and responsible operation and use of OHVs.
Note: Insurance companies may offer discounts on OHV insurance for completing an OHV safety class.
Off-Highway Vehicle Education Course
Whether you have been off-roading for years or are thinking of giving it a try, you can brush up on or try out your skills by taking an off-highway vehicle education course. In addition, most insurance companies offer a discount for completing one of our courses. Two online courses are approved by the Arizona Game and Fish Department: Official Arizona OHV/ORV Safety Course and Arizona OHV Safety Course. The Department also offers in-person courses that cover the knowledge and basic skills necessary to safely and efficiently operate a side-by-side.
Classroom Safety Education Courses
Quail Kids is an interactive learning experience designed to teach young riders the importance of off-highway vehicle safety. The course topics include protective riding equipment requirements, matching rider abilities to machine size and ethical riding.

The Arizona Game and Fish Department is currently developing hands-on and classroom safety education courses for ATVs and ROVs (side by sides). Information will be posted as soon as they are available. Contact: Kim Jackson at 623 236-7237.
Riding Gear
ATV Safety Institute
The ATV Safety Institute’s (ASI) primary goal is to promote the safe and responsible use of ATVs, thereby reducing accidents and injuries that may result from improper ATV operation by the rider. ASI developed a hands-on training course that introduces basic techniques for riding an all-terrain vehicle. The course also covers protective gear, local laws, finding places to ride, and environmental concerns.
ASI also offers a safety training E-Course.
Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle Association
The Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle Association (ROHVA) promotes the safe and responsible use of recreational off-highway vehicles (ROV).
ROVs are sometimes referred to as a side-by-side or utility terrain vehicle (UTV). ROHVA has developed two options for ROV safety, an E-Course and a Basic DriverCourse.
Motorcycle Safety Foundation
The Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF), an internationally recognized developer of comprehensive, research-based curricula, developed DirtBike School (DBS), which is a fun, one-day, hands-on training session available to anyone 6 years old or above that teaches basic riding skills and responsible riding practices, including risk management and environmental awareness.
Other OHV Safety Education Training Opportunities
Arizona State Association of Four-Wheel Drive Clubs sponsor safety clinics that teach the basics of 4WD.
United Four-Wheel Drive Association provides a 4WD safety and awareness program.
