Ben Avery Shooting Facility Clay Target Center COURSES AND GAMES
The facility features 16 lighted trap and skeet fields with voice-activated target releases, a 5-Stand field and four sporting clays courses ranging from beginner to master level. The fully paved, ADA-compliant combination trap and skeet field offers a barrier-free shooting experience with generous shade, close-in parking and an accessible portable restroom. When not in use by shooters with mobility assistance devices, the field is open to all range patrons.
TRAP RANGE GAMES
Trap shooting simulates a flushing game bird, with targets launched flying away from the shooter. Each field provides 25 targets from five shooting stations.
American Trap: Twenty-five flushing targets from five stations, simulating a bird flying away from the shooter.
Wobble Trap: Similar to standard trap but more challenging. The machine oscillates up, down and side to side, sending targets at faster speeds on unpredictable flight paths.
Doubles Trap: Two targets launched simultaneously from the trap house, requiring the shooter to engage both in flight.
International (Bunker) Trap: A highly challenging format housing 15 machines, three per station, beneath a bunker. Shooters fire from an elevated position at targets that travel left, right or straight at random, at speeds up to 90 mph.
SKEET RANGE GAMES
Skeet shooting dates to the 1920s, created to help sportsmen sharpen skills in the offseason. Shooters move in a semicircle, engaging 25 high and low targets launched to cross in front of them, a great game for individuals or groups of up to five.
American Skeet: Shooters move in a semicircle through eight stations, engaging 25 high and low crossing targets.
International Skeet: The Olympic format uses the same eight-station layout as American Skeet but with faster targets. Shooters must hold the gun butt at hip level until the target appears, which may be delayed up to 3.5 seconds after being called. Single and double target sequences also differ from the American format.
SPORTING CLAYS GAMES
Often called “golf with a shotgun,” sporting clays is a fun and rapidly growing sport. Targets are launched in many different directions, some in the air and some rolling on the ground. Some stations include elevated platforms or scissor-lift stands. There are four sporting clays courses geared toward shooters of different abilities.
Sporting clays courses are tailored to all experience levels:
Coyote Course: 15 stations, master level
Quail Course: Eight stations, beginner level
Rattlesnake Course: 15 stations, intermediate level
Roadrunner Course: 15 stations, advanced level; also available for corporate events
5-Stand: Targets are shot in rounds of 25 from five stands, with each shooter rotating from station to station. Targets are thrown in a predetermined pattern that is indicated on a menu. 5-Stand uses six to eight machines and simulates game bird hunting.
